What is a US ZIP Code made of?

A US ZIP Code contains five required digits. ZIP+4 keeps those five digits and adds a hyphen plus four optional digits when USPS needs to identify a more precise delivery sector and segment.

  • The first five digits are the ZIP Code. The first digit marks a broad national routing area, the next two identify a processing region, and the final two narrow mail to a local delivery area.
  • ZIP Codes describe mail routes, not borders. One ZIP Code can be associated with multiple acceptable place names and does not necessarily match a city or county boundary.
