How is a German postal code structured?

Germany uses a five-digit Postleitzahl (PLZ). The digits move from a broad routing zone to a more specific delivery area, and leading zeroes are part of the code.

  • Use exactly five digits. German postal codes contain no letters, spaces, or hyphens.
  • Keep leading zeroes. Codes in eastern routing areas can begin with 0 and must be stored as text.
  • PLZ identifies a delivery area. It does not prove that a complete street address is valid or deliverable.
